	January VOICE Just after New Year's Day, 1999, I visited Tolik. He was cooking "pelmeni" and invited me to stay to eat. His parents had not yet returned from a New Year's celebration and it was the third day in a row that poor Tolik had cooked pelmeni as a quick and easy way to get something to eat.
